creature nest

This is a praying mantis nest, hanging on the door of a barn that sits behind my house. Up until last year, I would have had no idea what this was, but this year I know fully well what they are.

My wife had a table that sat outside for part of the year inside last spring as she was painting and refinishing it for use in her studio. After it had sat inside the house for a few days, she noticed one day some small insects in the house - and then noticed hundreds (maybe thousands) of tiny praying mantis insects coming out of a similar looking nest that was on the underside of the table. She carried the table outside and tried to collect the insects that had already hatched and put them out in the garden.

It was quite a sight, and we did notice quite a few praying mantis' in the garden this past year. I will try to capture the hatching later this spring when it warms up and post here when it happens.
